Ingredients

  • 1/4 oz Coffee Liqueur
  • 1/4 oz Irish Cream
  • 1/4 oz Canadian Whisky

Instructions

Prepare Your Glass:
  1. Start with a clean shot glass to ensure the layers remain distinct.
Layer the Coffee Liqueur:
  1. Carefully pour the coffee liqueur into the bottom of the shot glass. This forms the first layer and provides a rich, sweet base.
Add the Irish Cream:
  1. Slowly layer the Irish cream over the back of a bar spoon to float it above the coffee liqueur. The density of Irish cream allows it to sit nicely on top of the denser liqueur below.
Top with Canadian Whisky:
  1. Finally, layer the Canadian whisky on top using the same method. The whisky will float on top of the Irish cream, completing the three-tiered effect.
Serve Immediately:
  1. Serve the shot immediately after layering to enjoy the visual appeal and distinct flavors of each layer as you drink.

Notes

The Story Behind the Name The Duck Fart shot is said to have originated in the 1980s at a saloon in Alaska. According to the legend, a customer asked a bartender for something new. After a few attempts, she created this layered masterpiece. When the first patron tried it, he exclaimed, "That's good, but it went down like a duck fart!" The name, as ridiculous as it is, stuck and helped make the shot an Alaskan icon.
Tips for a Perfect Shot
  • Master the Layering: The key to this drink is the layering. The back-of-a-spoon method is essential for a clean, professional-looking shot. Make sure to pour very slowly and use a cold Irish cream.
  • Customize Your Whiskey: While Crown Royal is the classic choice, you can use any smooth Canadian whisky. Some variations even use spiced rum for an added kick.
  • Make It a Cocktail: For a full-sized drink, you can build the shot ingredients over ice in a glass and stir.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
  • Is this a very strong shot? The Duck Fart is a relatively mild shot. It contains about one ounce of liquor, and the creamy, coffee flavors make it a delicious, easy-to-drink dessert shot.
  • What does a Duck Fart Shot taste like? It's a smooth, sweet, and creamy shot with rich flavors of coffee, vanilla, and caramel. The whiskey on top adds a subtle kick that balances the sweetness of the liqueurs.
